the occasional (but always excellent) street edits series returns, this time with a trio of high-grade scalpel works from chicago re-edit hero rahaan. as usual, the source material is dusty and obscure, and the reworks revelatory. -city of disco- is in many ways typical of rahaan s work, with carefully cuts and loops being used to create a thumping, house style groove (admittedly one that pays due reverence to the source material). there s more of a celebratory, soulful feel about the impeccable -strung out-, which turns a little-known disco-soul gem into a huggable dancefloor classic. best of all, though, is -brighten you up-, which sits somewhere between later electrofunk and early house, a proto-proto gem, perhaps. either way, it s a killer.

after being returned from his abduction by aliens from the hidden planet nibiru, dj overdose was given an alien synthesizer the haex-hrll as a thank you for all the cerebral research the aliens did on him. on returning back to earth all dj overdose had to do was finish the 6 tracks the aliens had started to work on, which became this ep. straight forward techno hop electro funk without any fancy-pants pretentious hooha. its like a black and white movie which makes you think why the hell is there colors anyway?! after completion, the only record label he could imagine being fit for such rawness would be viewlexx... and so here it is.

when your debut set on pete tongs essential mix starts with masters at work remixing saint etienne and ends with kraftwerk, the tunes in the middle better hold their own. that was the challenge mobilee head anja schneider set for herself on her recent addition to the legendary bbc radio program, and she delivered with the help of a debut from maya jane coles, a classics from underground resistance, and an airing of her own latest, jimmy, which, with its propelling conga loop and haunting organ climax, made for one of the most memorable moments of the two hour session.

the act of shimmering is the act of leaving conscious thought behind. it s accepting what lies beyond the corporeal, transcending the physical, the soul is aware and the body, eyes, skin are distant empty casings. a clamorous, chaotic cacophony surrounds a beatific center. an endless assault of guitar, of noise that glistens, a poignant rigor. jannick schou, proprietor of tape loop drone, places himself within the tunnel of din to produce this profound work: an ethereal dream using nightmarish parts and images. black and grays generate vibrant innards. brightness is unearthed within the fetid mass and these six tracks immerse the listener into a raging sea to find a gentle undertow. furious outbursts emerge from simple, slow shivers. tremors of noise gather, reaching an elongated crescendo, becoming transformative, and shattering what form or structure was designed to contain such an outpouring of sound.

the inaugural release for the label offshoot of australian radio show noise in my head, tracks for performance serves up two new tracks from la-based anomaly suzanne kraft. originally conceived as a contemporary dance score, these proven body movers are some of the producers toughest work to date. dead ringer finds a snake charmer harmonising with the racket of a metal works factory while ruff bathers tries to operate the forklift under heavy sedation.

legworks 2nd single comes from another one of our texas compatriates, the indelible brett johnson, fresh off some amazing work on classic, get physical, rawax and other killer imprints. the mission harks back to some of our favourite dub-techno moments, but keeps its own flare with bretts signature robo-rhythms and chopped and screwed vocal cuts. on the remix tip, its label head lance desardi & convextion bringing their own flavour to the table respectively, with lance stepping to the chord memory, deep bass, and over sampled drums, and convextion going all the way out into hyper space with his usual sub-aquatic space funk.

adam beyer has been showing us the extent of his versatility for years and this ep solidly cements the idea that beyer can confidently swing between genres and keep up his consistently high standards within electronic music. youre the same is a remarkable piece of work and keeps the tech house bods moving and shaking. all the tracks on this three-part stunner are chunky, solid grooves, that are infused with dashes of techno, house and dub. vocal snippets are used to create some spine tingling hooks as well as moody pads to create eerie atmospheres. valium & lfos has already built up quite a following courtesy of its inclusion in beyers landmark amnesia terrace set for cocoon that was later broadcast as part of his drumcode live radio show. it has also been a mainstay in richie hawtins sets along with other accomplished djs including the likes of joseph capriati. a well accomplished single from the swede.

2014 was a busy year for ztrl and tape hiss alike. we’ve been enjoying the support of numerous music-addicts, record collectors and djs for which we are massively grateful. this is exactly why we are going back to where it all started and bringing you a new ztrl release. the tracks which are featured on jelen (’now’ in english) ep work well on their own yet they form a cohesive sound when put together. each track on the release is universal as we can think of them as dj tools in a good sense or as slowly building independent compositions. it’s up only to the djs how they wish to use them.

spencer parkers *rights for men* drops on his work them records this december with an instrumental & dub version in tow. 2014 has seen material from radio slave, concrete (paris) crew the outsiders, pittsburgh track authority and young male all grace parkers work them label, turning more than a few heads in the progress. closing the year out with his own 12 inch seems a fitting end to 2014 and in typical work them style, parker has turned an in unabashed club work out which is the berlin-based producers toughest work to date, evoking some of the aesthetics of his work as its not over.

the third release from wavefreform again comes to us from the east, and this time around it marks a reformation of sound for both the label and the artist. half of the long-running georgian duo greenbeam & leon, boyd schidt is a producer with over a decade of work already under his belt whose first releases emerged in 2007. as a solo artist, his career dates to 2010 with digital releases on georgia’s front rec, fvf records, and emote music, and a track on the new vinyl compilation from studio r°. with the hard, broken kick pattern, elevated tempo, and nods to electro, the a-side ‘phantom’, a collaboration with subex, is a change of pace for the artist and the hardest thing yet to emerge from wavereform. dubwise use of effects shows the same hands still at work, but the sound elements, granulated blasts of static and drop-based structure of the track hold strong parallels to the rejuvenated techno sound currently emerging from the uk. the b-side, ‘structure’, recalls the previous work of the artist: subtle, building dub techno rich in detail and with the dancefloor firmly in mind. there is clear experience at work here with his deliberate deployment and manipulation of elements as the track struts along while enveloping the listener in its smaller details. as it pauses and takes an extended breakdown, the details rush forwards, but it finds renewed force to power itself to the close. coming in this case from an established producer with a long history, this kind of control is not surprising, but it is more indication of the riches of the east that have yet to be discovered by audiences worldwide.

that future starts right here with the release of the check point ep and a title track that thunders straight out of the blocks with its steamroller kick drum and mighty bass synth. wade then strips things back, rolling out pulsing bass and percussive vibes on dark shadows before dropping more imperious drum work as he closes the ep with sunday in the sky.

legendary house producers, soichi terada & shinichiro yokota are back to kickstart the first release on london based label, hhatri. after almost 20 years, since their work on soichi terada s far east recording label, their music has become some of the most highly sought after, forward-thinking masterpieces in house music. featuring three of the finest, hard hitting house tracks from the far east, fully remastered and packaged with a monstrous remix by none other than, fabio monesi, expect it to smash the dance floor apart.

after a five year hiatus makaton makes a storming return to token. to be expected, bailey delivers a ruthless body of work incorporating hardcore components of british techno.

tokyo-based ryo murakami has been releasing slightly minimal-inflected house music since 2007. his club-oriented work has always been subtly atmospheric and deliberately soft-spoken and non-confrontational, conjuring up an original sound that fits to modern-day house music like a glove. he co-runs and releases on the panrecords label and has also published his music on dessous, poker flat, baud, curle, etc

anthony collins and francis harris keep up the creative pace of their frank & tony project following the recent sprinkles collaboration, and once again a fine selection of tracks from their lp are on offer for deeper, more leftfield kinds of house record bags.love brut is an uneasy burner that uses a minimal amount of elements to create intensity, proving that simplicity is very often the key. the dub mix of resistance is exclusive to the vinyl, and it too keeps a stripped attitude in place with its plain and simple drums peppered with poised melodic content. villa seurat has a fuller range of percussion at work but there are no more fireworks to be found here than there are elsewhere on the ep, appealing to a more subtle kind of taste

after the success of their first release charmin are back with another high quality wax. this offering showcases the talents of florist and close friend of the imprint tilman, all pressed up on heavyweight vinyl with a lovingly designed cover. the ep kicks off with “proof nothing” which is a statement of intent. deep, churning piano chords overlaid with delayed vocal samples all underpinned with a solid beat and deep bass. next up “raw” does exactly what it says on the tin. this is a stripped down thumper with crunchy claps and an infectious groove. “once again” has a looser, more percussive feel to it with machine gun snares rattling off overt the top of a killer chord line. bringing things to a close is “mood swings” which builds brooding atmospheres and eerie vocal snippets. all in all this ep carries on the good work of this exciting new label. charmin continues its journey to bring you uncompromising, underground house music of the highest order.

prime numbers are back with the next in their compiled ep series, once again selecting new tracks from producers who inspire & represent the sound of the label. this time it is a diverse outing, dwelling on the dubbier, more subtle side of things.

gavin russom returns to ecstatic recordings sister label entropy trax for the fledgling labels second release. building on the brooding atmosphere of the purge / enthroned with a pair of throbbing, synth-powered & acid-infused cuts, the telemetry/the benificent, the merciful 12inch draws together sonic touchstones found in russoms many projects, black metoric star, the crystal ark, and his work with delia gonzalez, melding them into two singular productions that pump and drive like the sequenced machines that power them.

t c f is the moniker of norwegian contemporary artist and experimental computer musician lars holdhus. his work explores themes of code, cryptography and privacy through the use of visual, sonic, built and written concepts. often the titles and descriptions of his work are written in cyphertext, the key to which is hidden within the piece itself. his forthcoming release on liberation technologies will further this cryptographic theme, consisting of digital and physical content containing the necessary keys to unlock the full meaning of the work.

a lot of water has passed under the bridge since the release of etienne jaumet’s night music, dating from october 2009. his hypnotizing music and enchanting live performances put him directly on the map. it’s just him who is in control of his ship. he moves without complexes from his saxophone to his drum machine (his beloved tr 808) while turning knobs modulating synths, and sending his voice through an echo.la visite, etienne’s brand new album, more luminous and jazzy than its predecessor, has been composed and produced within a two month period in the versatile studio. it became a piece of introspection, mentally as well as physically. in the title track, for which flop wrote the text, we hear etienne travelling through the inside of a body, fantastic voyage style.it is always surprising to see a record taking shape. etienne would arrive at the studio without any precise idea in head, approaching his work rather intuitively. he works standing up, which brings a very different energy than being seated behind a computer polishing up every detail. he is in total mastery of his set-up, ready to capture that short-lived moment of true creation. the only use a computer has for him, is to record his experiments - afterwards being mixed by jerome caron (blackjoy).in between night music and la visite, etienne has not been lazy. not only has he done numerous collaborations (amongst others with joakim, richard pinhas, francois & the atlas mountain) and picked up djing, he has also recorded a new zombie zombie album (rituels d’un nouveau monde) with cosmic neman, as well as the soundtrack loubia hamra. and he worked with artist felicie d estienne d orves on the installation satori. at this very moment, etienne and his saxophone are still part of the tour of james holden.

from the tropics comes whiskey disco, a sneaky re-edit label bent on dredging the decanter for diffident dancefloor genius from latent disco perpetrators. it is loosely connected to sleazy mcqueen and his assorted cohorts.
oslo-based, icelandic producer, b.g. baarregaard, returns to whiskey disco for his third solo ep, disco inn. the title song features a talented roster of icelandic-via-oslo musicians. inga Þyri coos blissful harmonies atop a deep groove comprised of electric guitar chucks by sigurður guðmundsson and organ and bass by baarregaard. this deep groove will work those balearic moments to-a-tee. on the reverse, undercover lover exposes rnb style vocals, delayed claps and bass groove on the outside cut and country style guitar sitting comfortably next to 303 acid on the inside for kaffibarinn, an homage to the legendary reykjavik music venue.

continuing the highly collectible coloured series, serge does it again with two more italo-styled electronic house work-outs. the first is an edit of 1979 disco classic >you can get over<. the second, >s averer<, is an original production by serge himself. and both do the damage just nicely thanks. get em while you can!

lobster theremin launch their first sublabel proper, heralding a darker, murkier and deeper sound on their newly minted mörk imprint. retaining its mother labels passion for championing newcomers, mörk launches with a debut release from young netherlandic producer nthng. cultivating a sound that sits somewhere between prince of denmark and early claro intelecto with splashes of clone influence, nthngs stripped-back techno walks fuzzy, shrouded paths through nolstagic moments in time. at times almost drowning, his engulfing sound is a raw reminder of the power of subtlety and the use of meditative looping along with a rough-around-the-edges production style has led to an incredibly moving debut work.

a new label is born, based in london discobar introduces their first release, produced by odd soul, a dear friend of theirs. spending many nights producing music in his studio, this french artist has finally become ready to showcase his talent. this ep is based on three light-hearted, trippy loops and original tracks. on top of this, the mole has added his authentic classy touch to remix odd souls work. this really is a family affair which is not to be missed.

cosmic disco ensemble midnight magic find their way on to the ever adaptive soul clap imprint for their next release. -viscous love- is a 5 track ep which see the magic ones explore the more spaced out corners of the disco universe. the ep starts with the funked out, slap-bass heavy, night flight before weaving its way to the more slo-mo pitched down viscous love and pick up , the later showcasing some synth work that parliment would be proud of. trouble t and electic shock finish the ep with aplomb, electric shock being one of the stand outs of the release with its driving italo-disco bass line.

san proper vocalising.....comes with a jacques renault remix the label say: - some think freedom comes with a price, others say freedom is a prize. then you have people who claim -the best things in life are free- . it takes up quite some time and effort, or better yet- work , to sort out answers to these questions. one might feel cornered by such issues...

fun mpc based songs that journey through a world of rich musical influence, whilst a now signature personal touch remains throughout. the considered production and musicality of all four tracks keep the record relevant for both hanging with the pooch at home, or getting your drink and smoke on in the club. halfway home is a massive leap forward for the label head, and a sign of the many great things yet to come from this fledgling producer.

after an 18-month hiatus, its time for the return of one of the uks true pacesetters: bloom. hydraulics is a brain-twisting four track ep of convulsing, mechanoid dancefloor compositions that represents the belfast producers most advanced body of work to date – and his debut on bristol label crazylegs.
